# Ground Reinforcement with Ocean Biaxial Geogrid 30 kN at Reliance Project, Vijayawada

At the Reliance Project in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Ocean Non Wovens supplied **Ocean Biaxial [Geogrid](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geogrid-manufacturers/) 30 kN** across 1950 SQM for ground reinforcement. The grid sits within the granular layer of pavements and working areas that carry repeated industrial traffic, where it locks the aggregate in place and spreads loads more evenly onto the subgrade.

The conventional answer to weak ground is a thicker aggregate layer, which means more excavation, more quarry material, more truck trips and more time. [Biaxial geogrids](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geogrid-manufacturers/biaxial-geogrid/) are now a standard alternative on industrial sites: they improve the stone already placed instead of adding more of it. They belong to the wider family of reinforcement [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) used in pavements, platforms and embankments.

## Project Overview

- **Project Type:** Industrial Infrastructure Project
- **Location:** Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
- **Product Used:** Ocean Biaxial Geogrid 30 kN
- **Quantity:** 1950 SQM
- **Application Area:** Ground reinforcement and load distribution

The reinforcement had to perform under repeated industrial loading and stay stable over the long term.

## How a biaxial geogrid works

A biaxial geogrid is a polymer grid with roughly square apertures and similar strength in both directions. The “30 kN” rating refers to its ultimate tensile strength per metre width, measured in both the machine and cross-machine directions (typically by ASTM D6637 or ISO 10319).

When a wheel load presses on an unreinforced granular layer over weak soil, the stone particles push sideways. That lateral spreading thins the layer under the wheel path and shows up as rutting. Aggregate placed on a geogrid partly penetrates the apertures and interlocks with the ribs, so the grid resists that sideways movement. The result is a mechanically stabilised layer that is stiffer and spreads load over a wider area of subgrade.

In a pavement or working platform, a correctly placed biaxial geogrid improves:

- Load distribution
- Aggregate confinement
- Bearing capacity of the section
- Pavement durability
- Resistance to rutting
- Overall structural stability

Because of this, geogrid-reinforced sections can often be designed with less aggregate thickness, or last longer at the same thickness. In India, the use of geogrids in road pavements is covered by IRC SP:59.

## Why industrial sites need reinforcement

Industrial pavements and yards see:

- Continuous heavy vehicle movement
- Dynamic loading
- Concentrated surface stresses
- Soil weakening during the monsoon
- Differential settlement

Seasonal moisture lowers soil stiffness and raises settlement risk, and variable subgrade across a large site creates soft spots. Unreinforced aggregate gradually spreads laterally under that loading and the pavement weakens. The geogrid spreads loads more uniformly across the subgrade and reduces those stress concentrations.

## Installation and quality control

A geogrid only works if it is flat, continuous and properly overlapped. The standard sequence is:

1. Grade and compact the subgrade
2. Remove protruding stones, roots and debris
3. Unroll the geogrid flat and free of wrinkles
4. Overlap adjacent rolls as specified (overlaps are usually increased on softer subgrades)
5. Spread aggregate from the end of the grid, pushing it forward rather than dumping it directly on the grid
6. Compact in controlled layers, keeping plant off the bare grid

Aggregate placement is where grids most often get damaged. Tipping stone straight onto the grid or tracking plant over it before there is enough cover can distort the apertures and reduce interlock, so spreading needs close supervision.

## Long-term performance

How a reinforced pavement holds up depends on:

- Drainage
- Aggregate quality
- Traffic loading
- Compaction quality
- Subgrade consistency
- Installation standards

Water trapped beneath the pavement is a common cause of failure, and a geogrid does not remove it. Reinforcement and drainage have to be planned together.

Where a geogrid lets the design use a thinner granular layer, the project also uses less quarried aggregate, fewer truck trips and less fuel, and a pavement that ruts less needs less maintenance. Typical uses include industrial pavements, logistics yards, transport corridors, storage platforms, working surfaces and other ground stabilisation works.

Ocean Non Wovens manufactures and supplies geogrids and other geosynthetics for industrial, transportation, [landfill](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/environment-dewatering-landfills/), irrigation and environmental projects across India.
