# Canal Lining: Enhancing Water Management with Ocean Non Wovens Geotextile

Ocean Non Wovens supplied 50,000 sq m of Ocean [Non Woven Geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) 520 GSM for a [canal lining](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/hydraulic-works/) project in Champaran, Bihar. The project aimed to cut water loss and improve water delivery along the canal.

**Location:** Champaran, Bihar

**Product used:** Ocean Non Woven Geotextile 520 GSM

**Quantity:** 50,000 sqm

## The need for canal lining

Champaran, in north-west Bihar, depends heavily on canal irrigation for its farmland. Unlined canals lose water through seepage into the bed and banks, erode as flow scours loose soil, and get choked by weeds. The water that leaks out never reaches the fields at the tail end, and the eroded soil silts up the channel downstream.

Lining the canal with a protective cover over a prepared bed addresses all three problems. Where the cover is a granular or pitched layer, or concrete panels, a geotextile underneath stops the bed soil from washing out through the gaps.

## What the geotextile does in a canal lining

A nonwoven geotextile is permeable: water passes through it, soil particles do not. That makes it a filter and separation layer rather than a seal. In a canal it typically does three jobs:

- **Filtration:** when the canal drains down, water in the banks flows back out. The geotextile lets it escape while holding the soil in place, so the bank is not piped out from behind the lining.
- **Separation:** it keeps the cover layer of soil and aggregate from sinking into the soft bed, and keeps fine soil from migrating up into the cover.
- **Protection:** at 520 GSM the fabric is thick and puncture-resistant. Heavy nonwovens in this range are also used as cushions under geomembranes in canal and pond linings.

Nonwoven geotextiles are specified by properties such as mass per unit area (ASTM D5261), grab tensile strength (ASTM D4632), CBR puncture resistance (ASTM D6241), apparent opening size (ASTM D4751) and permittivity (ASTM D4491). For a filter, the opening size is matched to the bed soil so fines are retained without the fabric clogging.

## Installation

The installation in Champaran followed these steps:

1. **Site preparation:** the canal bed was cleaned and graded to give a smooth surface for the geotextile.
2. **Geotextile placement:** the geotextile was laid in sections with overlaps, so there are no gaps where soil could escape between rolls.
3. **Anchoring:** the edges were anchored so flowing water could not lift or shift the fabric.
4. **Backfilling:** a layer of soil and aggregate was placed over the geotextile to protect it from mechanical damage and UV exposure.

Covering the fabric quickly matters: polypropylene and polyester geotextiles are UV-stabilised but are not designed for long-term sun exposure.

## Benefits for the canal

- **Stable bed and banks:** with the soil held behind a filter, the bed and banks resist scour and the lining cover stays in place.
- **Cleaner water downstream:** less eroded soil enters the flow, so the canal carries less silt.
- **Lower maintenance:** less erosion and weed growth means less desilting and repair.
- **Easy handling:** the rolls are light and flexible and can be placed by hand on canal slopes.
