# Case Study: Enhancing Cricket Ground Construction in Puri, Odisha with Geotextile Solutions

For a new cricket ground in Puri, Odisha, Ocean Non Wovens supplied 12,900 Sqm of [Geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) Separation Barrier-140 Gsm. The geotextile keeps the gravel base and the natural soil beneath it apart, so the ground drains and stays level instead of turning soft as the layers mix.

## Project details

- **Location:** Puri, Odisha
- **Product Used:** Geotextile Separation Barrier-140 Gsm
- **Quantity:** 12,900 Sqm

## Why a cricket ground needs a separation layer

A cricket ground has to give consistent bounce and pace and a safe, even outfield. It is built in layers: a sub-base, a drainage or base layer, and the root zone and playing surface on top. Each layer does a different job, and the design only works while they stay separate. If fine soil from below pumps up into the gravel, the drainage layer clogs, the surface goes soft and uneven, and water stands after rain.

A non-woven geotextile placed between the natural soil and the gravel stops that mixing. Water passes through the fabric, but the soil particles are held back, so the gravel stays clean and keeps draining.

## Site conditions in Puri

Puri is a coastal town on the Bay of Bengal with a heavy south-west monsoon. The site soil was a mix of loose sand and clay, prone to shifting and erosion. The main contractor needed a stable foundation, better drainage and a playing surface that would last.

## How the geotextile was used

**1. Sub-base preparation:** the site was levelled and the geotextile was laid on the prepared natural soil, with the gravel base layer placed on top. In this position the fabric keeps the gravel from being pushed into the loose sand and clay below and keeps fines from rising into the gravel, so the base stays stable under rollers, maintenance machinery and play.

**2. Drainage:** waterlogging is one of the main causes of lost playing days. The porous geotextile lets water drain down through it while filtering out the fine particles that would otherwise clog the drainage system, helping the ground dry out after monsoon rain.

**3. Long-term stability:** by keeping the layers distinct, the geotextile reduces the gradual settlement and soft spots that come from soil and gravel mixing, and with them the need for frequent repair.

## Choosing a geotextile for sports grounds

Under a sports field the geotextile carries light loads compared with a road, so a lighter grade such as 140 GSM is often enough for separation and filtration. What matters most is matching the fabric’s opening size to the soil, so it holds back fines without blinding, and laying it with adequate overlaps so soil cannot squeeze through at the joints.

Geotextiles are useful in renovating existing grounds as well as new builds. Many older grounds suffer from poor drainage and uneven surfaces because their base layers have mixed over time; adding a separation layer during reconstruction addresses the cause. The material also has to suit local soil and climate: for Puri, that meant sandy-clay soil and heavy monsoon rain.
