# Flood Protection Project at Ranchi, Jharkhand – Case Study

## Overview

In 2021, the Government of Jharkhand needed to protect riverbanks in Ranchi from monsoon flooding and bank erosion. Ocean Global supplied 300,000 sand-filled geobags to build the protection.

## The challenge

Ranchi’s rivers are rain-fed. They run low for most of the year, then rise quickly during the monsoon when heavy rain falls across the plateau. These surges scour the base of the bank, and unprotected banks collapse into the channel.

Erosion of this kind puts nearby roads, homes and farmland at risk. The client needed protection that could settle with the bank without cracking, hold through repeated high flows, and be built before the next monsoon.

## The solution

[Geobags](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geo-bags-manufacturers/) are geotextile containers filled with sand or soil and placed in layers against the bank. Together they form a flexible revetment. The fabric holds the fill in place and lets water drain through, so pressure does not build up behind the bank.

## Ocean Global’s scope

- Manufacture and supply of 300,000 geotextile geobags
- Delivery to site in Ranchi, phased to the construction schedule
- Technical guidance on filling, closing and placement

## Installation

Geobags are filled on site with sand or local soil, closed by stitching, and placed in overlapping layers from the toe of the bank upward. A launching apron at the toe guards against scour during high flows.

## Why geobags for this site

- **Flexible:** the revetment settles with the bank instead of cracking like a rigid wall.
- **Local fill:** only empty bags travel to site; sand or soil comes from nearby.
- **Quick to build:** bags are filled and placed with simple equipment and local labour.
- **Filter layer:** the geotextile keeps soil in while letting water through, which limits washout behind the revetment.
- **Easy to repair:** a damaged stretch is fixed by adding bags, not rebuilding.

## Result

The geobag revetment gives the bank a flexible, permeable cover that resists scour during peak monsoon flows. As the bank settles, sections can be topped up with extra bags, so maintenance needs no heavy plant.
