# Gabion Box Application for Structural Stability

## Project overview

**Project Name:** Infrastructure Stabilization Project

**Location:** Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh

**Product Used:** Ocean [Gabion Box](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/gabions/)

**Quantity:** 330 Pieces

## Introduction

Ocean Non Wovens supplied 330 Ocean Gabion Boxes for an infrastructure stabilization project in Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh. The site combined seasonal monsoon rainfall, erosion-prone soil and uneven terrain, so the retaining system had to tolerate ground movement, resist erosion and drain freely.

Gabions met all three requirements. A rigid concrete wall cracks when the ground beneath it settles unevenly and builds up water pressure behind it if its weep holes clog. A stone-filled wire mesh wall deforms with the ground instead of cracking, and water drains straight through it.

## How gabions work

A gabion box is a container of galvanized (or galvanized and PVC-coated) steel wire mesh, usually double-twisted hexagonal mesh, filled on site with stone. Stacked and laced together, the boxes form a gravity retaining structure: the weight of the stone resists the soil pressure behind the wall, and the mesh holds the stone together as one mass. In India, double-twisted hexagonal mesh gabions are specified under IS 16014, and internationally under ASTM A975.

Typical uses:

- **Retaining structures:** supporting soil in embankments and cut slopes
- **Erosion control:** protecting surfaces from soil loss by running water
- **Hydraulic structures:** river training works, culvert outfalls and drainage channels
- **Slope stabilization:** holding the toe of slopes against slips

Because the stone fill is open-graded, water passes through the wall, so hydrostatic pressure does not build up behind it. Water pressure behind a blocked wall is a common cause of failure in rigid [retaining walls](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/retaining-walls-soil-reinforcement/).

## Working with geosynthetics

Gabions are steel structures, not geosynthetics, but they are often designed together with [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/):

- **Geotextiles (separation and filtration):** a [non-woven geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) behind and under the wall stops fine soil washing into the stone fill while letting water through.
- **Geogrids (reinforcement):** layers of [geogrid](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geogrid-manufacturers/) in the backfill can reinforce the soil mass behind taller walls.
- **Geomembranes (barriers):** in some containment or environmental works, [geomembranes](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/) are combined with gabions.
- **Drainage geocomposites:** placed against the retained soil to carry groundwater away and lower pore pressure.

## Site challenges in Shajapur

**Monsoon erosion.** Shajapur lies on the Malwa plateau, where most of the year’s rain falls between June and September. Intense rainfall brings surface runoff and soil washout, weakens embankments and degrades slopes progressively.

**Irregular terrain.** The site had uneven slopes, varying gradients and pockets of weak soil, which raise the risk of local failures and differential settlement. A flexible wall can ride out that settlement where a rigid one would crack.

**Drainage.** Poor natural drainage lets water collect behind retaining structures, raising pore water pressure and reducing the soil’s shear strength. A free-draining gabion wall relieves that pressure.

## Installation

How a gabion wall performs depends as much on installation as on the mesh. The typical sequence:

- **Foundation:** excavate to stable strata, level and compact the base, and place a granular or geotextile layer.
- **Assembly and placement:** unfold each unit, stand up the sides and diaphragms, align it and lace it to its neighbours so the boxes act as one structure. Stack course by course to design height, staggering vertical joints.
- **Stone filling:** use hard, durable, angular stone larger than the mesh opening, placed by hand or machine to leave minimal voids. Fill in layers, with internal bracing wires across exposed faces, so the face does not bulge.
- **Lacing and closing:** lace lids and edges tightly with lacing wire and reinforce the corners.

Loose filling or weak lacing leads to bulging and deformation over time, so experienced crews matter.

## Performance and maintenance

- **Flexibility:** takes up minor ground movement without cracking.
- **Permeability:** prevents hydrostatic pressure building up behind the wall.
- **Energy dissipation:** the rough, porous face slows flowing water in hydraulic applications.
- **Durability:** stone does not weather meaningfully, and wire life depends on the coating.

Over time, soil and vegetation fill the voids, which binds the face and helps it blend into the slope. Maintenance is usually limited to checking for broken wires, bulging or scour at the toe and repairing locally. Because the wall deforms gradually rather than cracking suddenly, problems show up early and can be fixed before they become failures. Service life is governed by the wire coating: heavier zinc or zinc-aluminium coatings, and PVC coating where water or soil is aggressive, extend it.
