# Case Study: Application of GCCM in Industrial Infrastructure

- **Project:** Reliance Project
- **Location:** Jogwad, Gujarat
- **Product Used:** Ocean Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) 12 mm
- **Quantity Supplied:** 900 sqm

## Introduction

Ocean Non Wovens supplied 900 sqm of Ocean [GCCM](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/gccm/) 12 mm to a Reliance project at Jogwad, Gujarat, where it was used to line drainage channels and runoff paths, protect exposed soil from erosion and line utility corridors on the industrial site.

On a site like this, the usual alternatives are cast-in-place concrete lining or stone pitching. Both need batching, shuttering or hand placement, curing time and a steady supply of materials into a busy construction zone. A GCCM arrives as a roll, is laid like a geotextile and hardens in place once wetted, which suited the project’s need for [erosion control](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/erosion-control/) and surface protection without a slow concrete operation.

## Site conditions

Jogwad lies in Jamnagar district on the Saurashtra coast, which has a semi-arid climate. Most of the year is dry, but monsoon storms can be short and intense, producing fast surface runoff that erodes exposed soil faces and scours around drainage paths and foundations.

Industrial sites in this kind of setting typically deal with:

- **Subgrade variability:** mixed soil profiles, from sandy silts to clayey pockets, with uneven bearing capacity.
- **Surface erosion risk:** sudden rainfall produces high-velocity runoff that cuts into exposed slopes and embankments.
- **Dust and surface degradation:** in the dry season, loose surface material affects stability and adds maintenance.
- **Construction time pressure:** tight industrial programmes leave little room for the curing periods of conventional concrete.

Uncontrolled erosion and poor drainage are common reasons industrial pavements, embankments and channels need early repair, which is why channel and slope protection is usually built in from the start.

## What GCCM is and how it was used

A geosynthetic cementitious composite mat is a factory-made layer of dry cementitious mix held between [geotextiles](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) (typically with a waterproof backing on the underside). It is unrolled over the prepared surface and then wetted with water. The cement hydrates and the mat sets into a thin, hard, low-permeability concrete layer that follows the shape of the ground beneath it. The product type is specified internationally under ASTM D8364.

At Jogwad, Ocean GCCM 12 mm was used mainly for:

- Surface protection of drainage channels and runoff paths
- Erosion control on exposed soil surfaces
- Protective lining in industrial utility corridors

Compared with conventional concrete lining, GCCM offers:

- **Faster installation:** rolls are laid and hydrated by a small crew, with no formwork, so long lengths of channel can be lined quickly.
- **Simpler logistics:** no on-site batching, shuttering or concrete placing equipment.
- **Consistent thickness:** the mix and thickness are set in the factory, avoiding the variation of field-mixed concrete.
- **Close conformity:** the mat follows irregular profiles, leaving fewer voids for water to undercut.

## Other geosynthetics on industrial sites

GCCM is one of several [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) commonly used on industrial and infrastructure projects:

1. **Pavement reinforcement:** [geogrids](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geogrid-manufacturers/) and geotextiles improve load distribution in industrial pavements and can reduce the granular thickness needed.
2. **Soil stabilisation:** geotextiles and geogrids help weak or variable subgrades carry load, reducing over-excavation and replacement with granular fill.
3. **Erosion control:** GCCM, erosion control mats and turf reinforcement mats protect exposed surfaces from rain impact and runoff, especially before vegetation establishes.
4. **Drainage:** drainage geocomposites remove water and prevent pore pressure building up beneath pavements and behind structures.
5. **Environmental protection:** geosynthetics line containment areas, channels and industrial water structures to limit erosion, sediment transport and contamination.

## Installation and quality control

### 1. Subgrade preparation

GCCM is thin and follows whatever is under it. Soft pockets, uneven compaction or leftover debris leave voids beneath the mat, and an unsupported mat can crack once loaded. The subgrade needs trimming, compaction and removal of sharp protrusions before the rolls go down.

### 2. Laying and hydration

Installation is quick but needs discipline:

- Correct overlaps and joint detailing, with laps shingled in the direction of flow in channels
- Proper anchoring at the crest and terminations, usually in an anchor trench or with pins
- Thorough, even wetting so the full thickness of the mix hydrates
- Protection from premature drying and from traffic during initial curing

Uneven hydration and poor anchoring are the usual sources of early problems in GCCM linings.

### 3. Long-term performance

Durability depends on:

- UV resistance of the outer geotextile
- Resistance to chemicals where channels carry industrial effluent
- Abrasion resistance in high-flow zones

A GCCM lining should be designed within the flow velocities and loads the product is rated for, and protected from heavy mechanical damage.

### 4. Maintenance

Conventional concrete and masonry linings tend to need patch repairs, re-pointing and crack sealing. A continuous GCCM lining has fewer joints for weeds to root in or water to get behind, so routine maintenance on lined channels is generally lighter.

Ocean Non Wovens manufactures and supplies GCCM and other geosynthetics for industrial and infrastructure projects across India, with support from product selection through to installation. See more projects on our [case studies](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/case-studies/) page.
