# Geosynthetics for Railway ballast stabilization

[![Railway ballast stabilization](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Railway-ballast-stabilization.jpg)](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/geosynthetics-for-railway-ballast-stabilization/railway-ballast-stabilization/)

Rail networks are expanding to carry more passengers and freight, and much of the cost of running a railway goes into keeping the track in shape. Geosynthetics help with that in several ways, and one of the most useful is [railway ballast stabilization](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/railways/). Ocean Geosynthetics supplies geosynthetics for new railway lines and track rehabilitation.

Track performance depends on the substructure. A weak substructure lets the track lose its geometry, shortens the life of rails, sleepers and fastenings, and forces speed restrictions and more frequent maintenance.

A railway track substructure has four main parts: ballast, sub-ballast, drainage and subgrade. The ballast gives a firm bed for the sleepers, spreads the load and lets water drain away. The sub-ballast (the blanket layer on Indian Railways) sits between the ballast and the subgrade, keeps the two apart and adds strength over a weak subgrade. The subgrade is the natural ground or embankment fill, and its condition depends on local soil and climate. Drainage carries water away from the track before it can soften the subgrade.

**Role of Geosynthetics in the railway sector:**

Geogrids, [geocomposites](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geo-composites/), geocells and [geotextiles](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) are all used in railway work, for new track and for rehabilitation of existing formations.

Geotextiles with good puncture and tear resistance separate track layers of different grading and properties, and stop fine subgrade soil from pumping up into the granular layers (and ballast from being pushed down into the subgrade). This keeps the granular layers clean and extends the time between maintenance cycles.

**Ballast Stabilization:**Over soft or unstable subgrades, [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/our-products/) such as geogrids, geocells and geotextiles reinforce the trackbed. They spread the load over a wider area and increase the bearing capacity, so the ballast and the layers below it settle less under repeated train loads. Geogrids placed in or under the ballast also interlock with the stones and restrain their sideways movement. Ocean Biaxial Geogrid 30 kN was used this way on a [railway project in Hotgi, Maharashtra](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/railway-with-ocean-biaxial-geogrid-30kn/).

Ballast pockets are a common cause of track geometry problems. They form when repeated loading pushes ballast down into a soft subgrade, leaving depressions that collect water and soften the soil further. Track over ballast pockets needs more maintenance and may have to run at lower speeds.

The remedies are to improve and stabilise the subgrade, install proper drains to take away the excess water, and stabilise the ballast above.

Geotextiles are permeable but hold soil back, so they also act as a filter: water moves through freely without washing out or disturbing the subgrade.

Good drainage is essential to stop the track deteriorating. Drainage geocomposites that resist mechanical damage can be installed at the right points to provide cross-track drainage and stop water collecting in the formation.

Geosynthetics make the railway substructure stronger, so tracks hold their geometry longer and cost less to maintain. They are made to cope with the abrasion of ballast, the dynamic loads transmitted through the rails, and a wide range of climates.
