The reservoir supports wildlife and local communities, and the lining had to stop seepage without damaging the surrounding forest. ## Project overview The project, located deep in Kerala’s forests, needed a containment structure for a water reservoir. The reservoir matters for the ecology of the area and for the local communities and wildlife that depend on it. Conventional containment methods posed risks to the surrounding environment and would not have lasted, so the department turned to [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/). ## Challenges 1. **Environmental sensitivity:** work inside a forest had to keep its impact on the surroundings to a minimum. 2. **Durability:** the containment system had to withstand the weather and stay intact for many years. 3. **Remote location:** getting materials and equipment to site complicated the installation. Kerala’s climate adds to the durability demand. Much of the state receives around 3,000 mm of rain a year, most of it in the southwest monsoon from June to September, followed by the northeast monsoon. A reservoir liner there goes through heavy rain, full and drawn-down water levels, and strong sun between monsoons. ## Solution Ocean Non Wovens proposed [Ocean HDPE Liner 500 Micron](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/), a high density polyethylene geomembrane. The liner forms a barrier against seepage, so water stays in the reservoir and the surrounding soil and water bodies are not affected. An HDPE liner suits a remote forest site for practical reasons. It arrives in rolls that are far lighter to transport than the materials for a concrete or masonry lining, it needs no curing, and installation does not require heavy plant working across the forest floor. ## Product features 1. **High density polyethylene:** the Ocean HDPE Liner 500 Micron (0.5 mm) has good tensile strength and puncture resistance for its thickness, and carbon black in the sheet protects it against UV. 2. **Environmental compatibility:** HDPE is chemically inert in water and soil, and is widely used to line water storage and aquaculture ponds. 3. **Supplied to suit the project:** the liner was supplied to the project’s specifications so it fitted the reservoir with minimal waste. ## Installation Ocean Non Wovens’ team installed 21,000 square meters of Ocean HDPE Liner 500 Micron in the designated area. Despite the difficult terrain, the technicians placed the liner precisely and to strict quality standards. On a reservoir of this kind, installation generally follows the same steps: the bed and side slopes are trimmed and cleared of stones and roots, a geotextile cushion is laid where the ground is rough, panels are unrolled down the slopes and joined by thermal welding, seams are tested, and the liner edges are buried in an anchor trench along the crest so the sheet cannot slide or lift in wind.
