Badarpur lies close to the Yamuna floodplain, and the complex ground conditions and high water table meant the site needed reliable ground stabilisation. Geotextile was chosen as the solution. ## Challenges The geotextile had to be cost-effective and efficient for a project of this size. It needed the strength and durability to survive harsh site conditions, and the flexibility to install quickly over a large area. On wet, soft ground, the problems are predictable. Fill and aggregate placed directly on saturated soil sink into it and mix with it, so more material is needed and the finished surface settles. Exposed soil on slopes and open areas washes away in heavy rain. A [geotextile fabric](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-geotextile-fabric/) addresses both: laid on the soil before the fill, it keeps the two layers apart and spreads the load, while letting water drain through; on slopes, it holds the soil in place under a cover layer. ## Solution Ocean Non Wovens supplied geotextile fabric made for the demands of the NTPC project. It had high tensile strength and good puncture resistance, and was resistant to UV radiation and chemical degradation for long-term protection of the site. The fabric was also easy to install, which reduced installation time and cost.
