# Govt Project – Pond Construction in Madhya Pradesh: A Case Study on Ocean HDPE Liner (500 Micron)

For a government pond construction project in Madhya Pradesh, Ocean Non Wovens supplied and installed 10,200 SQM of Ocean [HDPE Liner](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) – 500 Micron to stop seepage and keep water in the pond. Government-built ponds in Madhya Pradesh store rainwater for irrigation and other use through the dry months, and an unlined pond on permeable soil can lose much of that water into the ground.

## Why ponds are lined

Government pond projects aim to increase [water storage](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/water/) and cut seepage losses. The lining system decides how much of the stored water survives until it is needed. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners are widely used because they are chemically resistant, flexible enough to follow the pond profile, and effectively impermeable when properly seamed.

A lined pond is a storage structure: it keeps water for use rather than letting it recharge groundwater. Where recharge is the goal, ponds are usually left unlined.

## Why Ocean HDPE Liner – 500 Micron

Ocean HDPE Liner – 500 Micron (0.5 mm) was chosen for its mechanical strength, UV resistance and resistance to environmental stress. Its key features:

- **Very low permeability:** HDPE geomembranes have an equivalent permeability of the order of 10^-12 cm/sec, so an intact, well-welded liner limits seepage to practically nil. In practice, leakage comes from holes and poor seams, not through the sheet.
- **UV and chemical resistance:** pond liners face high temperatures, sunlight and agricultural runoff. Carbon black in the HDPE protects it against UV, and polyethylene resists the fertiliser and pesticide residues found in farm runoff.
- **Service life:** life depends on thickness, UV exposure and whether the liner is covered. Covering the liner with soil, where the design allows, extends its life considerably.
- **Less earthwork:** compared with a clay or concrete lining, an HDPE liner needs far less excavation, haulage and material.

## Project execution

### Installation

The 10,200 SQM of Ocean HDPE Liner – 500 Micron was installed in this sequence:

- **Site preparation:** the pond bed was levelled and cleared of stones and debris that could puncture the liner.
- **Liner deployment:** panels were unrolled and positioned to avoid wrinkles.
- **Welding and seaming:** panels were joined by hot-wedge thermal fusion welding to give continuous, airtight seams.
- **Anchoring and protection:** the liner edges were anchored in compacted soil, with protective layers to stop the liner moving.

### Challenges

- **Heat:** Madhya Pradesh summers are hot, and HDPE expands in the sun and stiffens as it cools, which affects handling and welding. The material was checked before installation, and welding settings have to be adjusted to sheet temperature.
- **Uneven pond beds:** irregular ground needed extra preparation before the liner could be laid.
- **Government compliance:** the project had to meet Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) IS 15351:2015, the specification for laminated HDPE woven geomembranes for water-proof lining, which includes a 0.50 mm type.

### Benefits of the lined pond

- **Water retention:** the liner cuts the seepage losses of an unlined pond, so more stored water is available in the dry months.
- **Irrigation:** a reliable store of water reduces dependence on erratic rainfall.
- **Less pumping of groundwater:** stored surface water can replace some groundwater abstraction for irrigation.

## What Ocean Non Wovens provides on pond projects

- **Custom fabrication:** liners fabricated to the pond dimensions, which reduces offcuts and wasted material.
- **Quality control:** each liner batch is tested for tensile strength, environmental stress cracking and chemical resistance before dispatch.
- **On-site support:** technical assistance during installation.
- **Maintenance guidelines:** written maintenance protocols for the liner after handover.
