# HDPE Geomembrane – 5500 sq mtr to Chennai for Landfill – Case Study

![](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/download-3.jpg)

Ocean Geosynthetics supplied 5500 sq mtr of [HDPE Geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) for a [landfill](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/environment-dewatering-landfills/) in Chennai. The geomembrane lines the landfill so that leachate, the contaminated liquid that drains out of waste, cannot seep into the soil and groundwater below.

**Product:** [HDPE Geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) – 5500 sq mtr

**Location:** Chennai

## Problem

Waste that cannot be recycled or reused ends up in landfills. A badly built or badly managed landfill pollutes land, groundwater and air. Solid waste comes from homes, schools, hospitals, agriculture, industry and refineries, and as it decomposes it produces leachate and landfill gas. Methane in that gas can feed landfill fires and contributes to climate change.

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, generates large and growing volumes of waste as its population and urban area expand. The rising quantity of waste going to landfill made it necessary to reconsider the liners used to build them, to stop further damage to the environment. Chennai’s high water table and heavy north-east monsoon rainfall make an effective liner especially important.

## Solution

[Geomembranes](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/) are synthetic liners with very low permeability, used as barriers to stop or control the movement of liquids, gases or vapours. They are used in [waste management](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/waste-management/), oil and gas, transport and environmental projects, and are now standard in landfill liners.

Since the 1980s, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) has become the most widely used geomembrane material for landfills worldwide, for several reasons:

- **Strength:** high tensile strength and puncture resistance for its thickness.
- **No plasticisers or adhesives:** HDPE gets its flexibility from the polymer itself, unlike PVC, so it does not become brittle as additives leach out. Panels are joined by thermal welding rather than glue.
- **Chemical resistance:** HDPE resists the wide range of chemicals found in landfill leachate.
- **Weathering resistance:** with carbon black, HDPE can be left exposed, for example on side slopes and in lagoons.
- **Installation:** wide rolls and thermal welding make large areas quick to cover, and every seam can be tested on site.

In a landfill, the HDPE geomembrane is usually laid over a compacted clay layer or a geosynthetic clay liner, protected by a geotextile cushion, with a leachate drainage layer above. The specification most often used for HDPE geomembranes is GRI-GM13.

## **FAQs**

### Are geomembranes UV resistant?

Geomembrane-grade HDPE contains about 2 to 3% carbon black plus antioxidants, which protect it from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, so it can be left exposed for long periods. UV and heat still age the material slowly, so exposed liners last less long than covered ones.

### How do geomembranes perform in cold climates?

Geomembranes perform well in cold climates if they are designed and installed properly. HDPE stays tough at low temperatures, but it contracts as it cools, so it is installed with slack to avoid being pulled tight in cold weather.

### Can geomembranes be used in potable water applications?

Yes, if the material is certified for drinking water contact, for example to NSF/ANSI 61. Standard landfill-grade liners are not automatically suitable, so check the certification before specifying a liner for potable water.

### What thickness of HDPE geomembrane is used in landfills?

Landfill base liners are commonly 1.5 mm (1500 micron) HDPE or thicker, laid over a GCL or compacted clay layer as a composite liner. The thickness is set by the design and the applicable regulations.
