# Reinforced Cement Concrete Project in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra

For a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) project in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, Ocean Non Wovens supplied 2,857 SQM of Ocean [HDPE Liner](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) 300 Micron, used as a protective and separation layer in the concrete works.

## Project overview

- **Project Name:** Reinforced Cement Concrete Project
- **Location:** Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra
- **Product Supplied:** Ocean HDPE Liner 300 Micron
- **Quantity Supplied:** 2,857 SQM

The liner was used as a protective and separation layer in RCC civil works. This kind of application is common in drainage channels, utility corridors, subgrade protection beneath concrete slabs, and moisture barriers for industrial and infrastructure buildings.

## What an HDPE liner does under RCC

Concrete is strong but not watertight, and RCC substructures in contact with soil are exposed to moisture, aggressive chemicals and subgrade movement. A 300 micron (0.3 mm) HDPE sheet laid beneath or behind the concrete does four jobs:

- **Moisture barrier:** keeps groundwater and surface water from migrating into concrete substructures, which lowers the risk of reinforcement corrosion.
- **Seepage control:** provides a low-permeability layer under concrete channels, tanks and drains.
- **Chemical protection:** separates concrete from aggressive soils or industrial effluent.
- **Subgrade separation:** stops soil mixing into the concrete at the base and stops cement paste and mixing water draining into a dry subgrade during the pour.

A sheet under a slab also acts as a slip membrane, reducing friction between slab and subgrade so the concrete can shrink with less restraint cracking.

The site context matters here. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar lies on the Deccan basalt plateau, where black cotton soils are common. These clays swell when wet and shrink when dry, so a barrier that keeps moisture changes away from the underside of concrete is useful in this region.

## Related products: GCCM

This project used HDPE liner only. On similar RCC-related works, geosynthetic cementitious composite mats ([GCCM](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/gccm/)) are also used. A GCCM is a flexible mat filled with dry cementitious mix that is laid like a fabric and hardens when hydrated into a thin concrete layer. Typical uses:

- Lining drainage channels and canals to reduce erosion and seepage
- Protecting slopes and embankments from surface runoff damage
- Rapid lining of culverts and stormwater channels
- Erosion protection beneath and around RCC structures

Some GCCM products include a polymer membrane on one face. Where they do not, an HDPE liner beneath the mat or RCC adds a separate barrier against seepage and subgrade moisture.

## Other geosynthetics used in RCC and allied works

[Geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) do several jobs alongside concrete:

1. **Pavement reinforcement:** geogrids and geotextiles below pavements spread load and improve performance over weak ground. IRC SP:59 gives the Indian guidance for geosynthetics in road pavements.
2. **Soil stabilisation:** on weak clayey or expansive subgrades, a geotextile separation layer keeps aggregate and fine soil from mixing, so the base keeps its load-bearing capacity.
3. **Erosion control:** erosion mats, GCCM and geotextiles protect slopes, channel linings and embankments during the monsoon.
4. **Drainage:** geocomposite drains beneath slabs carry water laterally, reducing hydrostatic pressure and uplift risk where the water table is high.
5. **Environmental protection:** HDPE liners are standard in containment structures, wastewater channels and industrial utility corridors to keep contaminants out of soil and groundwater.

## Site challenges

### Variable soil

Subgrades range from silty clay to loose fill and expansive black soil. Uneven settlement under a liner causes wrinkles and stress concentrations, so the bedding has to be prepared evenly.

### Monsoon installation

Rain changes deployment schedules. A wet subgrade can trap water beneath the liner, and water pressure can lift a sheet that has not yet been weighed down by concrete. Drainage and moisture control during installation help.

### Subgrade preparation on tight sites

On constrained industrial or urban sites, a perfectly smooth subgrade is hard to achieve. Sharp stones, debris and uneven compaction can puncture a thin liner. A non-woven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) cushion beneath it reduces that risk.

## Installation and quality control

### Surface preparation

The subgrade must be free of sharp objects, roots and protrusions. At 300 micron, minor irregularities can puncture the sheet once concrete and loads go on top.

### Joints

Thin sheets are usually overlapped, and taped or welded, rather than seamed like thick geomembranes, but joint quality still decides whether the barrier works. Short or open overlaps become seepage paths. Field inspection of joints, visual checks and trial pulls are the basic quality-control measures.

### Edges and anchorage

Liner edges must be anchored or terminated so the sheet does not slide or lift while concrete is poured. Poor edge detailing is a common cause of displaced liner under wet concrete.

### Protection during concreting

Reinforcement bars, spacers and equipment can puncture the liner. Bar chairs should sit on the sheet without cutting it, and workers and barrows should run on boards, with installation and concreting sequenced so the liner is exposed for as short a time as possible.

## Long-term performance

- **UV:** exposed polyethylene degrades under prolonged sunlight. Under concrete it is protected, but exposure during construction should be kept short.
- **Thermal movement:** HDPE expands and contracts with temperature. Laying the sheet without tension and allowing for movement avoids wrinkles and stress concentrations.
- **Chemical exposure:** HDPE resists most industrial effluents, salts and mild acids, which suits utility corridors and drainage channels. Compatibility with specific effluents should still be checked.
- **Mechanical stress:** repeated loading from the structure and traffic vibration can damage an uncushioned liner over time.

Buried and protected from UV, HDPE geomembranes can keep functioning for several decades (Koerner, R.M., *Designing with Geosynthetics*, 6th Edition).

## Maintenance and lifecycle

A liner adds to construction cost. It earns that back by keeping water out of the concrete and the subgrade, which means:

- Less water reaching the concrete, so less reinforcement corrosion
- No subgrade weakening from seepage
- Fewer repairs in lined channels and utility corridors
- Longer service life for RCC structures in moisture-prone ground
