The liner forms the impermeable barrier between the waste and the ground beneath, keeping leachate out of the soil and groundwater. ## Project overview **Project Name:** Landfill-KUMBHI, UP **Product Used:** Ocean HDPE Lining Sheet-1.5mm **Quantity Used:** 9000 sq m ## Why a landfill needs a liner Rain falling on stored waste percolates through it and picks up dissolved organics, salts and metals. This liquid, called leachate, collects at the base of the cell. Without a barrier it seeps into the subsoil and can reach groundwater that nearby communities draw on for drinking and irrigation. Containing leachate, collecting it and treating it is the main job of an engineered landfill and of the [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) in it, and India’s Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 require new sanitary landfills to have a base liner system for this reason. ## Why 1.5 mm HDPE High-density polyethylene is the standard geomembrane for landfill base liners because it has very low permeability and resists the wide range of chemicals found in leachate. A thickness of 1.5 mm (1500 micron) is the usual minimum specified for municipal solid waste landfill base liners, in India and internationally. It gives enough thickness for reliable dual-track fusion welding and enough margin against puncture and stress cracking. Landfill-grade HDPE is normally specified to GRI-GM13, which sets minimum values for density (0.940 g/cc or more), tensile properties, tear and puncture resistance, carbon black content and stress crack resistance. In a typical base lining system, the HDPE [geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/) sits on a compacted low-permeability soil layer or a [geosynthetic clay liner](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geosynthetics-clay-liner/), forming a composite liner. A heavy non-woven geotextile goes on top to protect it from puncture, followed by the leachate drainage layer. ## Implementation 1. **Site assessment:** Ocean Non Wovens worked with the client to assess the site and identify the areas that needed lining. 2. **Supply to project needs:** the Ocean HDPE Lining Sheet-1.5mm was supplied to suit the specific requirements of the project. 3. **Joint installation:** teams from both companies worked together during installation to keep the work accurate and on schedule. On a landfill liner, installation quality matters as much as the material. Panels are joined by dual-track fusion welds, each seam is checked by air-pressure testing of the channel between the two tracks, and patches and repairs are extrusion welded and checked by vacuum box or spark testing.
