# Landfill Project at Kolkata – Case Study

For a landfill project in Kolkata, Ocean Non Wovens supplied 28000 square meters of [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/), used in the landfill’s lining and drainage layers.

- **Product**: Geotextile, 28000 Square Meter
- **Location**: Kolkata

## What a sanitary landfill is

A [landfill](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/environment-dewatering-landfills/), or sanitary landfill, is an engineered waste disposal site built to protect the environment and public health. It is not the same as open dumping. Waste is compacted in layers to reduce its volume, and the site is monitored and managed for leachate (contaminated liquid) and landfill gas.

Faecal sludge can be disposed of in landfills along with municipal solid waste. Even a well-built and well-run landfill eventually fills up, and over many years its containment can deteriorate, so landfills should take only waste that cannot be reused. Preventing waste in the first place, and separating different types of waste for reuse, is more sustainable.

## Problem

Kolkata’s consumption has grown quickly and the city has struggled to keep up with its solid waste. According to senior officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the city generates roughly 4500 metric tonnes of solid waste every day from its 144 wards, and almost none of it is sorted at source.

The unsorted waste is carried to dumping grounds on the city’s eastern edge. Scrap dealers have set up sorting and recycling operations on the adjoining wetlands, which are being contaminated and encroached on. The East Kolkata Wetlands treat much of the city’s sewage naturally and are a Ramsar site; at this rate, they could be lost within a few years.

For people living nearby, the smell of rubber and refuse thrown out of scrap workshops makes it impossible to keep windows open. Residents have complained to the authorities many times without result, and the open waste is harming their health. Enclosed bins and proper processing would have prevented much of this.

## Solution

A geotextile is a permeable fabric made from synthetic polymer fibres, usually polyester or polypropylene. Non-woven geotextiles are made by needle-punching either staple fibres or continuous filaments into a felt-like sheet. They are light, strong in tension, resistant to corrosion and biological attack, and easy to install. Their fine pore structure lets water and gas pass while holding back soil particles.

Ocean Non Wovens supplied 28000 square meters of geotextile to the Kolkata landfill. In a landfill, non-woven geotextile does several jobs:

- **Protection:** placed against the [HDPE geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/), it cushions the liner from puncture by stones in the subgrade and in the drainage gravel above.
- **Filtration:** wrapped around or laid over the leachate drainage layer, it keeps waste and soil fines out of the gravel and pipes so the drainage system does not clog.
- **Separation:** it keeps soil, drainage aggregate and waste layers from mixing.
- **Gas and water transmission:** its permeability lets leachate drain down and landfill gas move to collection points.

The geotextile does not stop seepage itself. In the anti-seepage (liner) system, the needle-punched non-woven geotextile and the HDPE geomembrane work together: the geomembrane is the barrier that restricts the escape of contaminated leachate and the migration of pollutants, the geotextile protects it, and the drainage layer above carries leachate away for collection and treatment. Specifying the right geotextile weight for protection, and the right pore size and permeability for filtration, is what keeps the system working over the life of the landfill.
