# Case Study: Enhancing Landscaping & Watering Solutions with Ocean Non Woven Geotextiles in Aurangabad

For a landscaping and watering project in Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Maharashtra, Ocean Non Wovens supplied and installed 10,000 square metres of Ocean [Non Woven Geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) 1.2mm thick. The geotextile was used to keep the ground stable, manage water and provide [erosion control](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/erosion-control/) under the planted areas.

Aurangabad is in semi-arid Marathwada, with a short monsoon, long dry months and frequent drought years. Landscaping there has two jobs: make every litre of irrigation count, and stop the occasional heavy downpour from washing out soil and gravel.

## What a non-woven geotextile does in landscaping

A needle-punched non-woven geotextile is a felt-like sheet of synthetic fibres. Water passes through it freely, but soil particles are held back. In landscaping and [irrigation](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/agricultures/) works it is used for separation, filtration, drainage and protection, most often between planting soil and a gravel drainage layer, under paths and gravel beds, and wrapped around drains.

## Soil separation and stability

In Aurangabad the Ocean Non Woven Geotextile served as a separator between layers of soil and gravel. Without it, fine soil washes down into the gravel over a few seasons: the gravel stops draining, the soil above settles, and planted areas sink and become waterlogged. With the geotextile in place, each layer keeps its thickness and its function.

## Drainage and water management

Too much water at the roots causes rot and erosion; too little and plants wilt. The geotextile lets excess irrigation and rainwater pass down into the drainage layer while keeping the soil, and the moisture it holds, in the root zone. Because the drainage layer stays clean, it keeps working, so beds drain after heavy rain instead of staying saturated.

## Erosion control

Erosion control was a key part of the Aurangabad work. On slopes and banks, running water strips topsoil and the nutrients in it. A geotextile under the soil and gravel holds them in place, so plants keep a stable base and the landscaped areas keep their shape. On steeper or more exposed slopes, [erosion control mats](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/erosion-control-mats/) on the surface do the same job until vegetation takes over.

## Roots and weeds

Unlike a plastic sheet, a non-woven geotextile is permeable to air and water, so the soil beneath it does not go sour and roots are not starved of moisture. In Aurangabad its dense structure also stopped weeds coming up through the gravel areas, which means less competition for water and nutrients and less need for herbicide. It also keeps decorative gravel and mulch from sinking into the soil, which keeps maintenance down.

## Benefits for the client

- **Resource conservation:** less irrigation lost to waterlogged, poorly drained beds and less herbicide.
- **Lower maintenance:** less soil erosion, fewer weeds and stable gravel areas reduce upkeep on a large landscaped site.
- **Durability:** buried synthetic geotextile does not rot. Kept covered by soil or gravel and out of direct sunlight, it lasts for many years.

## Installation notes

For landscaping, the ground is graded and cleared of sharp debris, the geotextile is rolled out with overlaps between strips (typically 300 mm or more) and pinned, and soil or gravel is placed on top without driving equipment directly on the fabric. Geotextile left exposed to the sun degrades, so it should be covered soon after laying.
