# Multi-Geosynthetic Highway Project

**Doboka, Assam**

For a highway infrastructure project at Doboka in central Assam, Ocean Non Wovens supplied three geosynthetics, each with a separate job: a drainage geocomposite to move water out of the structure, geostraps to reinforce the soil, and a non woven geotextile to keep soil layers apart. Heavy monsoon rain, fine-grained alluvial soils and a seasonally high water table are common along road corridors in the Brahmaputra valley, and each of these products answers one of those problems.

## Project Overview

**Project Name:** [Highway](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/road-highway/) Infrastructure Project

**Location:** Doboka, Assam

**Products Used:**

- Ocean Geocomposite 5.5 MM: 500 SQM
- Ocean Geostrap (30–85 kN): 43,500 Mtr
- Ocean Geotextile 150 GSM: 400 SQM

## What each product does

### Geocomposite 5.5 MM: drainage and pressure relief

A drainage [geocomposite](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geo-composites/) is a plastic drainage core (a geonet or similar) with a filter geotextile bonded to one or both faces. The geotextile lets water in and keeps soil out; the core carries the water along its plane to an outlet. The 5.5 MM figure is the product thickness.

Used in a road structure, it:

- Drains infiltrated water quickly and laterally
- Reduces hydrostatic pressure behind or beneath structural layers
- Stops water collecting in the subgrade

Trapped water is one of the main causes of pavement and embankment failure in high-rainfall areas, because wet soil loses strength. A drainage layer that keeps water moving keeps the soil stronger.

### Geostrap 30–85 kN: soil reinforcement

Geostraps are flat polymeric strips, usually high-tenacity polyester yarns encased in a polyethylene sheath, laid in horizontal layers within compacted fill. The 30–85 kN range is the tensile strength of the strap grades supplied. Friction between the strap and the surrounding fill transfers load from the soil into the strap, so the reinforced fill can stand steeper and carry more load than unreinforced soil.

On highway work, geostraps are mainly used in reinforced soil (RE) walls and reinforced embankments, such as flyover and bridge approaches, where the straps connect to the facing panels. In these structures they:

- Add tensile capacity to the soil mass
- Hold the facing and fill together as one gravity block
- Reduce deformation and differential settlement of the fill

### Geotextile 150 GSM: separation and filtration

A 150 GSM non woven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) (150 grams per square metre) is a light separation and filter fabric. It:

- Separates aggregate from subgrade soil
- Stops the layers mixing and contaminating each other
- Lets water through while retaining soil particles

Without separation, fines pump up into the aggregate under traffic, the granular layer loses strength and the pavement deforms. In RE walls, the same kind of fabric is commonly placed behind the joints between facing panels so fill cannot wash out through them.

## Site conditions in central Assam

**Rainfall.** Annual rainfall across Assam generally runs from about 2000 to 3000 mm, most of it in the monsoon, with central districts around Doboka toward the lower end of that range. Water that gets into the road structure softens the subgrade and lowers its bearing capacity.

**Soils.** Valley alluvium often includes soft, fine-grained silts and clays with low shear strength that deform under load when wet.

**Groundwater.** A water table that rises in the monsoon keeps the subgrade moist, raises pore water pressure and increases the risk of long-term settlement.

Drainage, reinforcement and separation each tackle one of these conditions, which is why highway designs in the region often combine them.

## Installation points

A system with several geosynthetics depends on getting each one in the right place and order, as set out in the project drawings. The general rules:

- **Geotextile:** laid flat on a prepared surface with specified overlaps, before any aggregate is placed over it
- **Geostraps:** laid at the design spacing and length in each lift, pulled straight and connected to the facing as detailed, with fill compacted in layers over them
- **Geocomposite:** laid with the filter facing the soil and the core continuous to a drainage outlet; a blocked or misaligned outlet stops it working
- **Construction control:** keep plant off exposed geosynthetics, avoid damage while placing aggregate, and keep each layer continuous along the stretch

## Long-term benefits

When the three functions work together, the structure has a higher load-bearing capacity, settles less, holds less water in its structural layers and needs fewer repairs and overlays. Reinforcement can also reduce the quantity of granular material and the land needed for side slopes, and the use of geosynthetics in road pavements is covered by the Indian Roads Congress guideline IRC SP:59.

Ocean Non Wovens supplies geocomposites, geostraps, geotextiles and other [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) for highway and infrastructure projects across India, including high-rainfall regions of the Northeast.
