The liner holds the water in, stops it seeping into the ground below and keeps the water bodies full through Delhi’s dry months. The National Thermal Power Corporation’s eco park at Badarpur covers 884 acres, next to the former Badarpur Thermal Power Station. An unlined pond loses a large share of its water to seepage, has to be topped up constantly, and in a dry season may empty altogether. The lining material had to retain water without polluting the soil or the water, keep the ponds safe for aquatic life, and cope with Delhi’s climate: summer temperatures well above 40°C with strong sun, cold winters, and heavy monsoon rain. ## The solution [High-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/) were used for the man-made water bodies across the park. A 500 micron (0.5 mm) [HDPE liner](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) is a common, cost-effective choice for decorative and recreational ponds, where water depths are modest and the bed can be prepared smoothly. - **Seepage control:** HDPE has very low permeability, so a continuous, welded liner stops leakage and seepage from the ponds and lakes. - **Clean separation:** The liner acts as a barrier between the pond water and the ground beneath it, in both directions, so the soil does not take up pond water and the pond does not take up dissolved material from the soil. - **Weather resistance:** Carbon-black-stabilised HDPE resists UV and stays flexible through Delhi’s hot summers and cold winters without cracking or tearing. - **Durability and flexibility:** The sheet is strong, follows the contours of irregular landscape ponds, and stretches over minor settlement. - **Safe for aquatic life:** HDPE is chemically inert in water, which is why it is also widely used to line fish and aquaculture ponds. For landscape ponds like these, the liner is usually laid on a smoothed, compacted bed (with a non woven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) cushion where the ground is stony), welded into a continuous sheet, anchored in a trench around the edge, and often covered with soil or stone on the banks for appearance and UV protection.
