## Geosynthetic Composite Cementitious Mat (GCCM)

A geosynthetic composite cementitious mat (GCCM, also written geosynthetic cementitious composite mat or called “concrete cloth”) is a flexible fabric impregnated with a dry cementitious mix. You unroll it, fix it, and wet it. Once hydrated it hardens into a thin, fibre-reinforced concrete layer that follows the shape of the ground. Ocean Geosynthetics supplies GCCM in 7, 8, 10 and 12 mm thicknesses, in rolls 2.4 or 4.8 m wide.

It is used where poured or shotcrete concrete is slow or impractical: ditch and channel lining, slope armouring, culvert outfalls, and remote sites that a ready-mix truck cannot reach. No mixer, pump or formwork is needed, only water.

## How GCCM works

The mat is a three-dimensional fibre matrix that holds a dry concrete mix, bonded to a backing layer on one face. In the dry state it is flexible and can be cut with a utility knife, draped over uneven ground and fixed with pins or screws. Water, sprayed on or applied by immersion, starts the cement hydration. The fibres stay in the hardened layer as reinforcement, so the cured mat resists cracking and spalling better than unreinforced concrete of the same thickness. According to the specifications below, the mat forms a solid layer within 24 to 48 hours of hydration.

Compared with a cast-in-place concrete lining, the practical differences are:

- **Logistics:** rolls are delivered by ordinary truck and moved by hand or with a small excavator spreader bar; no batching on site.
- **Labour and plant:** a small crew can lay it, which matters on hill slopes, canal banks and confined spaces.
- **Thickness:** 7–12 mm; a cast-in-place lining is typically several times thicker, so far less material is moved and placed.

## Applications

The main functions are erosion protection and weed suppression on surfaces that need a hard, durable lining:

- Slope stabilisation and protection on road and rail cuttings, embankments and landfill side slopes
- Channel lining and bank reinforcement: drains, stormwater ditches, irrigation canals
- Culvert inlets and outfalls, where scour undermines headwalls
- Relining damaged concrete ditches and channels without breaking out the old concrete
- Weed control along fences, medians, rail tracks and in landscaped areas
- Light-duty pathways and access paths, temporary or permanent
- Bunds and secondary containment around fuel or chemical storage

## Properties and test standards

ASTM D8364 is the specification for GCCM materials and sets the minimum performance values a product must meet to be called a GCCM. Ocean’s GCCM is supplied to meet them. The properties in the table above are measured by:

- **Thickness:** ASTM D5199
- **Mass per unit area:** ASTM D5993
- **Tensile strength and elongation:** ASTM D6768
- **Compressive strength of the cured mat:** ASTM D8329, with specimens cured per ASTM D8030
- **Water impermeability:** ASTM D5887 (flux test)
- **Reaction to fire:** EN 13501-1, Class B-s1,d0 (limited contribution to fire, low smoke, no flaming droplets)

## Choosing a thickness

All four grades share the same tensile and puncture ratings; thickness and weight increase from 7.9 to 12.58 kg/m². Thicker mat gives more abrasion resistance and service life. As a starting point:

- **7–8 mm:** weed suppression, slope protection with low flow, ditch lining with clean, slow water
- **10 mm:** drains and channels with regular flow, culvert outfalls, relining old concrete
- **12 mm:** channels carrying sediment or debris, higher velocities, areas with occasional foot or light vehicle traffic

For a hydraulic lining, check flow velocity and shear stress against the manufacturer data and the design criteria for the project. GCCM is a thin lining, not a structural slab, so it should sit on a compacted, stable subgrade.

## Installation basics

1. Trim the subgrade, remove sharp stones and vegetation, and compact it. Fill voids so the mat is supported everywhere.
2. Dig anchor trenches at the crest and edges as drawn.
3. Unroll the mat, fibre face up. In channels, run rolls along the flow direction and lap the upstream roll over the downstream one so water cannot get under the joint.
4. Overlap adjacent rolls and join them by mechanical fasteners (screws or pins), sealant along the joint, or both, as the specification requires.
5. Hydrate thoroughly with a fine spray until the whole thickness is saturated. Do not jet water directly onto the surface, which can wash out the mix.
6. Backfill anchor trenches and let the mat cure. Keep traffic off until it has hardened (24 to 48 hours).

Keep rolls dry, covered and off the ground until laying. A roll that gets wet in storage will start to set.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is GCCM?

A geosynthetic composite cementitious mat: a flexible, fibre-reinforced fabric filled with dry cement mix that hardens into a thin concrete layer when you add water.

### How long does GCCM take to set?

It forms a solid layer within 24 to 48 hours after full hydration. Strength keeps increasing as the cement cures, as with ordinary concrete.

### Which standard covers GCCM?

ASTM D8364, Standard Specification for Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) Materials. Test methods it references include ASTM D8329 for compressive strength and ASTM D8030 for sample preparation and curing.

### Can GCCM replace a concrete drain?

For lining drains, ditches and channels, often yes, provided the subgrade is stable and the flow is within the product’s limits. It is not a structural slab, so it does not replace a reinforced concrete drain carrying loads.

### What roll sizes are available?

2.4 m or 4.8 m wide by 20.84 m long, in 7, 8, 10 and 12 mm thickness. [Contact us](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/contact/) for quantities, delivery and a quote.
