# Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Sheets

![](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Geomembrane2-1.jpg)

Ocean Geosynthetics manufactures low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sheets in thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 3 mm for lining, moisture barriers and containment. LDPE is softer and more flexible than HDPE, so it follows uneven ground, folds around corners and is quick to lay by hand. This page covers what LDPE sheet is good at, where it is the wrong choice, and how to specify it.

## **What are LDPE sheets?**

LDPE sheets are thermoplastic membranes extruded from low-density polyethylene resin, with a density of about 0.910 to 0.940 g/cm³. The branched polymer chains that give LDPE its low density also make it flexible and tough, with high elongation before it tears. The sheets are used for containment, lining and protection where the liner has to conform to the ground rather than bridge it.

Polyethylene is chemically inert and does not rot. With UV stabilizers added, LDPE sheet can be used outdoors, and its flexibility helps it resist puncture by deforming around a stone rather than cracking.

## **Key features of Ocean LDPE sheets**

1. **Flexibility:** drapes over irregular subgrade and into trenches, corners and around pipes with fewer stress points than a stiff sheet.
2. **Chemical resistance:** withstands water, dilute acids, alkalis and salts. For hydrocarbons, solvents and aggressive leachate, HDPE is the safer choice.
3. **UV stability:** made with stabilizers that slow UV degradation for outdoor use. Covering the sheet with soil still extends its life considerably.
4. **Thermal behaviour:** LDPE softens at a lower temperature than HDPE, with a melting point of roughly 105–115°C. It is suited to ambient-temperature water and moisture barriers, not hot effluent.
5. **Weldability:** the sheets heat-weld readily into continuous, watertight joints.
6. **Microbial resistance:** polyethylene does not support microbial growth, which matters for fish ponds and water storage.
7. **Multi-layer coextrusion:** our sheets are made by multi-layer coextrusion, which improves mechanical properties and chemical resistance compared with a single-layer film.
8. **Recyclable** thermoplastic.

## LDPE or HDPE: which do you need?

| | LDPE sheet | HDPE sheet |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Density | About 0.910–0.940 g/cm³ | 0.940 g/cm³ or more (GRI-GM13) |
| Feel | Soft, flexible, easy to fold | Stiff, holds wrinkles |
| Strength per mm | Lower tensile and tear strength | Higher |
| Chemical resistance | Good for water and dilute chemicals | Broader, including leachate and hydrocarbons |
| Typical uses | Farm ponds, canals, watercourses, vapour and moisture barriers, temporary works | Landfills, leachate and chemical ponds, oil pits, large exposed reservoirs |

If the regulator or design calls for an HDPE geomembrane (for example an MSW landfill base liner), LDPE is not a substitute. See [HDPE sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) for those grades, or the [geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/) page for a comparison of all liner types.

## **Applications of LDPE sheets**

### 1. **Agriculture**

Liners for irrigation canals, field channels, farm ponds and reservoirs, where they cut seepage losses. In India, IS 9698 is the code of practice for lining canals with polyethylene film, and IS 15828 covers plastic-lined farm ponds.

### 2. **Waste management**

Temporary covers, daily and interim covers, and secondary barriers at waste sites. Landfill base liners in India are specified as 1.5 mm HDPE under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, so LDPE is used around a landfill rather than as its primary liner.

### 3. **Construction**

Vapour and moisture barriers under floor slabs and road pavements, foundation liners, and protective layers over insulation. Ocean has supplied [300 micron LDPE liner for road infrastructure](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/road-infrastructure-ldpe-liner-300-micron/) and [LDPE liner as a construction moisture barrier](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/ldpe-liner-in-construction-moisture-barrier/). For structural waterproofing of basements, rafts and tanks, see [waterproofing sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/waterproofing-sheet/).

### 4. **Industrial**

Brine ponds, effluent treatment plant lagoons and secondary containment for chemicals that LDPE is compatible with. Check the chemical resistance against the actual effluent before choosing LDPE over HDPE.

### 5. **Aquaculture**

Fish and shrimp pond lining, where a flexible, economical liner that follows the pond shape is wanted. See also [pond liners](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/pond-liner-manufacturers/).

## Choosing a thickness

Ocean offers LDPE sheets in custom thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 3 mm. Thinner sheet is enough for a moisture barrier under a slab or a covered canal lining on fine soil. Choose thicker sheet when the subgrade has stones, the liner will be exposed to sun and foot or cattle traffic, or the water depth is large. On rough ground, a nonwoven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) under the sheet protects it far more cheaply than extra thickness.

## Installation basics

- Trim and compact the subgrade; remove roots, stones and sharp debris.
- Unroll the sheet loosely so it can settle without stretching, and hold it down with sandbags against wind.
- Join panels by heat welding, overlapping as required by the welding method.
- Anchor the edges in a trench at the crest of slopes and backfill with compacted soil.
- Cover with soil, or with lining tiles or concrete in canals, as soon as practical to protect the sheet from UV, animals and maintenance equipment.

Our team offers technical support for installation. When properly installed and protected from mechanical damage, UV-stabilized LDPE sheets keep their strength and impermeability over a long service life.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can LDPE be used instead of HDPE for a landfill?

Not for the base liner. Indian MSW landfills need 1.5 mm HDPE (or equivalent) under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. LDPE is suitable for temporary covers and secondary uses around the site.

### Can LDPE sheets be used outdoors?

Yes, if the sheet is UV-stabilized. A soil or concrete cover still gives a much longer life than leaving the sheet exposed.

### Is LDPE safe for fish ponds?

Polyethylene is inert and widely used for lining fish and shrimp ponds. The sheet does not rot and does not support microbial growth.

### What is 300 micron LDPE in mm?

0.3 mm. 1000 micron equals 1 mm.
