Rain runs off and cuts gullies, water soaking in raises pore pressure and weakens the soil, and weathering loosens the surface. Once soil starts moving, it brings drainage problems and sediment with it. At the NTPC site in Gurgaon, slope failures and erosion had to be controlled because of the ecological damage they would cause. Gurgaon gets most of its rain in short, heavy monsoon spells, and weathering of the exposed slopes adds to the problem. The slopes needed a surface layer that would hold soil in place, improve its resistance to erosion and keep them stable. The materials chosen were geotextile and geocell 712* 75 mm. ## Solution **Geotextile.** A geotextile is a permeable geosynthetic fabric. Laid on the prepared slope, it lets water and air pass while holding soil particles back, so the slope drains without washing out. With the geotextile in place on the unstable slopes, sediment and rock no longer washed down onto the flat terraces below. **Geocell.** Ocean Global geocells are lightweight, expandable HDPE honeycomb mats. On a slope they are anchored with pins over the geotextile and filled with soil. The cell walls hold the infill in place, break up the flow of runoff into small pockets so it cannot build speed, and give vegetation a protected place to root. In the 712* 75 mm grade, 712 mm is the weld spacing that sets the cell size and 75 mm is the cell depth, a common choice for [erosion control](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/erosion-control/) on moderate slopes. Geocells are cost-effective, and once vegetated they leave a green slope rather than a hard surface. Together the two layers work as a system: the geotextile filters and separates at the soil surface, and the geocell confines the cover soil above it against erosion. ### Frequently asked questions ### Is geocell resistant to UV radiation? Yes. HDPE geocells are stabilised with carbon black so they can stay exposed on a slope while vegetation establishes. Once the cells are filled and vegetated, the strips are largely shaded and buried. ### Can geocell be used for load support under airfields? Geocell is used for load support on paved and unpaved areas, including shoulders, access roads and hardstands at airfields. Under aircraft pavements it is one layer of a designed pavement section, with deeper cells and granular infill, not a substitute for the design. ### Is geocell compatible with various soil types? Yes. Cells can be filled with sand, gravel, topsoil or concrete depending on the job. On slopes, topsoil infill is common so grass can root through the cells; on soft or cohesive subgrades a geotextile is usually placed beneath the geocell as a separator.
