# Slope Stabilization in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh Using Coir Geotextile – A Sustainable Approach to Erosion Control and Hill Slope Protection

## Project overview

Ocean Non Wovens supplied [Coir Geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/coir-geotextile/) (700 GSM) covering 1,000 square metres for a slope stabilisation project in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. The aim was to cut surface erosion, help vegetation establish, and hold the slope surface together until plant roots could take over long-term stabilisation.

Kullu sits in the Beas valley, where steep slopes, heavy monsoon rain and loose, weathered soils make erosion and slope failure common. Road widening and changes to natural drainage add to the problem on many hillsides.

## Why hill slopes in Himachal need protection

The Himalaya is a young, tectonically active range, and Himachal Pradesh is one of the Indian states most exposed to landslides: the Geological Survey of India’s landslide susceptibility mapping places a large share of the state in moderate to high hazard zones. On an unprotected cut or fill slope, monsoon rain typically causes:

- Loss of topsoil
- Rills that deepen into gullies
- Progressive weakening of the slope face
- Risk to roads, houses and utilities below

A slope treatment therefore has two jobs: immediate [erosion control](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/erosion-control/), and a vegetated surface that keeps the slope stable after the treatment material is gone.

## What the coir geotextile does

Coir [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) is a woven mat of coconut husk fibre. The 700 GSM grade used here is a mid-to-heavy weight, chosen for its balance of strength, permeability and biodegradability on a steep slope.

- **Surface erosion control:** The mat breaks the impact of raindrops and slows runoff across the slope, so less soil is carried away in heavy rain.
- **Temporary soil retention:** Coir is not structural reinforcement in the way a synthetic geogrid is, but the pinned mat holds the surface soil in place on steep gradients.
- **Vegetation support:** Coir holds moisture and shades the soil, which helps seeds germinate. As the plants establish, their roots take over the job of binding the soil.
- **Drainage:** The mat is highly permeable, so rainwater passes through rather than ponding on the surface.

Natural fibre geotextiles like this are a standard part of bio-engineering on hill slopes, riverbanks and embankments where the goal is a vegetated finish rather than a hard one.

## Installation on site

In Kullu the crew had to work with uneven slope geometry, limited access for machinery and quick changes in weather. The steps followed were:

1. **Surface preparation:** Loose debris, stones and unstable soil were removed, and minor regrading gave the mat close contact with the soil. Gaps under the mat let water run beneath it and wash soil out.
2. **Anchoring:** Rolls were laid on the slope and pinned with biodegradable or steel pins at regular intervals. Even a heavy coir mat can shift in the first few storms if it is not pinned properly.
3. **Seeding and soil cover:** Grass seed and native plant species were introduced below or above the coir layer, and in places a thin layer of soil went over the mat to improve seed-to-soil contact.
4. **Edges and overlaps:** Overlaps between adjacent rolls were maintained so runoff could not get under the mat edges, a common failure point in erosion control work.

Standard practice for erosion control blankets is to key the top edge into a small anchor trench at the crest of the slope and to lap each roll so the upslope roll sits on top, shingle-fashion, so water flows over the joint rather than into it.

## Practical constraints

- **Short working windows:** Weather in the Kullu hills changes quickly, and crews often have only short dry spells to finish a section before rain returns.
- **Logistics and access:** Getting rolls up to remote slopes costs more and takes longer than delivery on flat ground.
- **The establishment period:** The mat controls erosion from day one, but the slope stays vulnerable until vegetation takes hold. This period needs monitoring and sometimes temporary drainage.
- **Material lifespan:** Coir is biodegradable and typically breaks down over 2 to 5 years depending on climate and soil. That suits the environment, but the vegetation has to be fully established before the mat is gone.

## Long-term performance

Success on a slope like this is judged by how well it turns into a stable, vegetated surface, not just by erosion control in the first season. Coir helps that transition in three ways:

- Root growth raises the shear strength of the surface soil
- Less sediment washes into nearby streams and drains
- The mat breaks down into organic matter, leaving nothing to remove

Slopes treated this way should be inspected through the first few monsoons for local failures, lifted edges or patches with thin vegetation. Maintenance at that stage is usually reseeding or re-pinning, not structural repair.

Coir is one part of Ocean’s range for environmental work. On ponds, reservoirs, embankments and shorelines, [geosynthetics](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/category/geosynthetics/) such as geomembranes and synthetic geotextiles do the lining and erosion protection, including in [aquaculture](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/suitable_sectors/agricultures/) projects.

## Outcome

The 700 GSM Coir Geotextile across 1,000 SQM in Kullu has reduced surface erosion noticeably and improved vegetation growth on the treated slope. As plant cover thickens, the roots are expected to give the slope long-term stability without any hard structure.
