Buyers who compare a large pond liner on the rate per square metre alone usually get two surprises later: the order is far bigger than the water surface, and installation, underlay and freight add a second bill. This guide shows how to size the order, which material and thickness suit which pond, and how to read a quote so you can compare suppliers fairly. We do not publish a rate card here. HDPE and LDPE are made from polyethylene resin, and resin prices move with crude oil and petrochemical supply, so a figure printed today can be wrong next month. Send your pond size and use and ask for a dated quote. ## What goes into a pond liner price A supplier’s rate for the sheet is built from a few inputs you can check: - **Polymer.** HDPE, LDPE and laminated woven polyethylene all cost different amounts per kilogram of material, and they suit different ponds (see the materials section below). - **Thickness.** For a plain sheet, mass rises in step with thickness. A 1000 micron sheet holds twice the polymer of a 500 micron sheet, so expect its material cost to be roughly double. - **Order quantity and roll size.** Larger orders and standard roll widths cut cutting, handling and packing cost per square metre. - **Freight.** Liner rolls are heavy and bulky. Distance from the factory, the number of trucks and whether a crane or loader is available at site all show up in the delivered price. - **Additives and grade.** UV-stabilised black sheet with carbon black, virgin resin and test certificates cost more than an unbranded roll of unknown origin, and they are what keeps an exposed pond liner working for years. On top of the sheet sit the costs that are easy to forget: a geotextile underlay on stony ground, welding and installation, anchor trench excavation, and GST. ## Work out the liner area before you ask for a price The liner covers the bed, every side slope and a strip buried in an anchor trench around the rim. That makes the order much larger than the water surface. **Illustrative example: a 20 m × 20 m farm pond** Take a square pond 20 m × 20 m at the top, 3 m deep, with side slopes of 1 vertical to 1.5 horizontal. 1. Each slope runs 4.5 m horizontally, so the bed is 20 − (2 × 4.5) = 11 m square, or 121 sq m. 2. The sloping length of each side is √(3² + 4.5²) ≈ 5.41 m. 3. Each side slope is a trapezium with parallel sides of 20 m and 11 m: (20 + 11) ÷ 2 × 5.41 ≈ 83.8 sq m. Four sides give about 335 sq m. 4. The anchor trench runs round the 80 m perimeter. Allowing about 1.5 m of sheet per running metre (run-out, trench depth and trench width) adds roughly 120 sq m. Total: about 576 sq m of liner for a pond with a 400 sq m water surface, before welding overlaps and offcuts. That is 44% more sheet than the surface area. Every supplier quote should be priced on this kind of developed area, so give them the top dimensions, depth and slope, not just “a 20 by 20 pond”. ## Choosing the material The material decides both the rate and how long the pond will hold water. | Material | Where it fits | Price position | | --- | --- | --- | | HDPE sheet | Fish and shrimp ponds, reservoirs, canals, effluent ponds; exposed or covered | Mid; needs welding crews | | LDPE sheet | Farm ponds, canal and watercourse lining on uneven ground, usually covered | Lower per sq m at the same thickness; less strong | | Laminated woven HDPE (IS 15351) | Farm ponds and water harvesting tanks with low head | Low; light, but thinner and less durable | [HDPE sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) are the default for commercial aquaculture and water storage because they are UV-stabilised with carbon black, chemically inert and can be fusion-welded into one continuous sheet. [LDPE sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/low-density-polyethylene-ldpe-sheets/) are softer and drape over irregular ground with fewer stress points, which makes them handy for small, hand-laid ponds, but they have lower tensile and tear strength. As a starting point for HDPE: - **300–500 micron:** small farm ponds and water harvesting on smooth, well-compacted soil, ideally covered. - **500–1000 micron:** fish and shrimp ponds, where the slopes see sun, cleaning and foot traffic. - **750–1500 micron:** reservoirs and larger water storage with higher heads. Move up a grade when the subgrade is stony, the liner will stay exposed, or cattle and machinery will work around the pond. Your designer or any state pollution control board condition overrides these ranges. On stony ground, a nonwoven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) under the liner often protects it more cheaply than buying a thicker sheet. ## Costs that sit outside the sheet rate When you add up a large pond liner job, list these separately so nothing appears later as an “extra”: - **Subgrade preparation:** trimming slopes, compacting, removing stones and roots, filling soft spots. - **Underlay:** nonwoven geotextile over the full liner area where the soil is gravelly or rocky. - **Welding and installation:** hot-wedge welding for long seams, extrusion welding for patches and pipe penetrations, plus labour to unroll and ballast the panels. - **Seam testing:** air-pressure tests on double-wedge seams and vacuum-box tests on extrusion welds. - **Anchor trench:** excavation and backfill around the rim. - **Freight, unloading and GST.** For a full budget covering supply, installation, testing and accessories on a pond or landfill cell, see [how much a geomembrane project costs](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/how-much-does-geomembrane-cost/). ## How to compare pond liner quotes Ask each supplier to quote against the same written brief, then check: 1. Is the rate per sq m, per kg or per roll, and for what thickness and width? 2. Is the area the developed area of the pond, including slopes and anchor trench? 3. Is it virgin resin, and will they give a test certificate for density, thickness and carbon black? 4. Is freight to site included, and is GST shown separately? 5. Is welding and installation included, and who provides seam tests? 6. Is the underlay priced, and at what GSM? Polyethylene liners are priced off resin, and resin prices follow crude oil and petrochemical supply. Most suppliers hold a quote for a short period only, so check the validity date before you compare two quotes issued weeks apart. ### How much bigger than my pond should the liner be? Size it from the bed, side slopes and anchor trench, not the water surface. In the illustrative 20 m × 20 m, 3 m deep pond above, the liner is about 576 sq m against 400 sq m of surface, before overlaps. ### Is a thicker liner always worth the extra cost? Not always. Thickness buys puncture and tear resistance and a longer exposed life. On a stony bed a geotextile underlay may give more protection per rupee than going from 500 to 750 micron. On a pond with exposed slopes and regular cleaning, the thicker sheet usually pays for itself. ### Can I install a large pond liner myself? A small LDPE pond can be hand-laid. A large HDPE pond needs panels welded on site with hot-wedge and extrusion welders, and the seams tested. Seams are where most liners leak, so use a trained crew. ### What details should I send for a quote? Top length and width, depth, side slope, soil type (sandy, clayey, stony), what the pond is for, whether the liner will be exposed, and the delivery location.
