The core is an HDPE [geonet](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geonet/): a net of intersecting ribs that leaves open channels for water to flow along the plane of the sheet. A non-woven [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) is bonded to one or both faces. The geotextile filters soil out of the incoming water and stops soil being pressed into the net, and the geonet carries the water to an outlet. One roll does the job of a granular drainage layer plus a separate filter fabric. Ocean’s geocomposites have a geonet core laminated with non-woven polypropylene filter geotextile on both faces, and are available to Railway and MORTH specifications. ## What it did on the RVNL project - **Drainage:** the geocomposite carried water out of the soil, preventing water building up and protecting the structure from water-related damage. Coastal Goa receives heavy monsoon rain, so in-plane drainage capacity matters on rail formations and earthworks there. - **Filtration and separation:** the geotextile faces kept fine particles from migrating into coarse granular layers, so soil layers stayed stable. - **Support to soil structures:** by keeping soil drained, the geocomposite helped the earthworks keep their strength and resist settlement. A geocomposite is a drainage product rather than a reinforcement layer; it improves stability by controlling water, not by adding tensile strength. - **Material use:** a thin geocomposite replaces a thick layer of drainage aggregate, cutting quarried material and haulage. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is a geonet geocomposite suitable for harsh climates? Yes. HDPE geonets and polypropylene geotextiles tolerate heat, moisture and chemical exposure well. Like most geosynthetics they should be covered after installation, because long UV exposure degrades the geotextile faces. ### Can the geocomposite be matched to project requirements? Yes. Core thickness, in-plane flow capacity under load and the filter fabric’s opening size are chosen to suit the soil, the load on the layer and the expected flow. Often, especially where good drainage aggregate is scarce or expensive to haul. It installs faster, uses less space and gives consistent flow and filtration properties.
