The trust wanted a playing field that would stay stable and hold up over the long term, without the erosion and maintenance bills it had been dealing with. ## Project overview The project set out to improve the structural stability and service life of the cricket ground. Ocean Non Wovens was selected to supply geotextiles for [soil stabilisation](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/solution/retaining-walls-soil-reinforcement/) and erosion control. ## Challenges 1. **Soil erosion:** erosion was affecting the integrity of the playing surface. 2. **Maintenance costs:** traditional soil stabilisation methods had come with high maintenance costs. 3. **Longevity:** the client wanted a solution that would fix the immediate problems and also keep the ground durable for years. Chennai’s climate adds to this. Most of the city’s rain falls during the northeast monsoon from October to December, often in intense spells. A sports field that cannot drain fast enough ponds, softens and loses material, and fine soil washes into the drainage layers and clogs them. ## Solution Ocean Non Wovens recommended a 150gsm non-woven geotextile for soil stabilisation and erosion control. The quantity, 31,300 square meters, was worked out from a site assessment and engineering analysis. In a sports ground build-up, a geotextile of this weight typically does three things: - **Separation:** it keeps the native subsoil apart from the gravel or sand drainage layer above, so the layers do not mix under rolling and foot traffic. - **Filtration:** water drains down through the fabric while soil particles are held back, so the drainage layer and any subsurface drains stay open. - **Stability:** a clean, uniform base gives the playing surface consistent support and limits uneven settlement. ## Implementation 1. **Site assessment:** Ocean Non Wovens assessed the ground to understand its specific problems and requirements. 2. **Tailored design:** based on that assessment, the team proposed the quantity and placement of geotextile needed to control erosion and improve stability. 3. **Installation support:** Ocean Non Wovens provided on-site support so the geotextile was laid to the engineering specification, with proper overlaps and no wrinkles before the layers above were placed. ## Outcomes 1. **Improved soil stability:** the geotextile layer improved the stability of the ground and reduced the risk of erosion. 2. **Lower maintenance:** a durable buried layer reduces the repair work that traditional methods needed. 3. **Longer service life:** with stable, well-drained layers, the ground is set up to last longer for the Velammal Educational Trust.
