# Case Study: Non-Woven Geotextile for a Waterproofing Project in Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Ocean Non Wovens supplied and installed 6,000 square metres of 2 mm thick [Non-Woven Geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/) for a large waterproofing project in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Bhubaneswar has a tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of about 1,500 mm, most of it in the June to September monsoon, so below-ground and roof waterproofing has to cope with long periods of wet ground and standing water.

## What a non woven geotextile does in waterproofing

A non woven geotextile is not itself a waterproof barrier. It is a permeable fabric: water passes through it easily. In a waterproofing system it works alongside the waterproofing membrane or coating, doing the jobs the membrane cannot:

- **Protection:** laid over the membrane, it cushions it against backfill stones, reinforcement bars, screed placement and foot traffic, which are the usual causes of punctures and leaks.
- **Drainage and pressure relief:** it lets water move to drains instead of collecting against the structure, reducing hydrostatic pressure on the membrane.
- **Filtration and separation:** it stops soil fines washing into drainage layers and keeps fill from mixing with other layers.

A 2 mm needle-punched fabric (the figure is thickness, not weight per square metre) is thick enough to give useful puncture protection while staying flexible enough to follow corners and changes in level.

## Common challenges in waterproofing

1. **Water seepage:** a waterproofing system has to stay continuous across varied soil and site conditions.
2. **Longevity:** materials must withstand prolonged moisture without degrading.
3. **Damage during construction:** membranes are often punctured by backfill and follow-on trades before the building is even finished.
4. **Adaptability:** materials must follow the contours and details of each site.

## Application in the Bhubaneswar project

Ocean Non Wovens supplied 6,000 square metres of 2 mm non woven geotextile, installed as a continuous layer within the waterproofing system to protect the underlying structures from water ingress. Its contribution:

1. **Protection:** the fabric’s thickness and tensile strength shield the waterproofing layer from mechanical damage.
2. **Drainage:** its permeability allows controlled water movement, preventing waterlogging and reducing hydrostatic pressure.
3. **Durability:** polypropylene and polyester do not rot and resist the chemicals and micro-organisms found in soil and water.

### Practical advantages

- **Easy handling:** light rolls are easy to transport, cut and lay, including on roofs and in basements.
- **Compatibility:** the fabric sits between the membrane and concrete, screed, soil or asphalt without reacting with them.
- **Heat:** once covered, the geotextile also shields the membrane from direct sun and the high summer temperatures in Bhubaneswar.
- **Low added weight:** a geotextile adds almost no dead load, which matters on roof slabs.
- **Cost:** a protection fabric is usually cheaper than repairing a damaged membrane, or than a protective screed alone.

### Properties to check

For a protection geotextile, the properties that matter are mass per unit area (ASTM D5261), thickness (ASTM D5199), CBR puncture resistance (ASTM D6241) and wide-width tensile strength (ASTM D4595 or ISO 10319). In India, IS 16090 covers geotextiles used as protection or cushioning materials. Check delivered rolls against the specified values before they go down.
