# What Does a Pond Liner Cost?

## **What are pond liners?**

[Pond liners](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/pond-liner-manufacturers/) are waterproof sheets laid under a pond to stop the water seeping into the ground. Any pond built on permeable soil needs one.

They are made of rubber (EPDM or butyl), HDPE, RPE or PVC.

Choosing the right liner saves money mostly on shipping and installation, not only on the material. Large liners are fabricated by specialist manufacturers such as Ocean Non Wovens Pvt. Ltd.

Tarpaulin pond liners are used mainly for water retention: lining lakes, fish farms, garden ponds, and artificial streams in parks and gardens. The liner must be protected from sharp objects underneath it and from being punctured by anything in the water.

Protection can be a layer of sand, concrete, fibre matting or [geotextile](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/geotextile-manufacturers/). Pond lining film is made in rolls of PVC or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) [Geomembrane](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/). The strips can be welded together on site or prefabricated in our factory. At the top of the bank, the liner edge is either buried in an anchor trench or fixed to a vertical brick or concrete wall.

## **Different Types of pond liners**

Pond liners are classed by material, and each has its own advantages and drawbacks.

**PVC pond liners:** cheap, flexible, easy to shape and popular for DIY garden ponds. PVC has poor UV resistance when left exposed, and the plasticisers in standard grades can harm fish, so for fish ponds use a grade certified as fish-safe.

**Butyl pond liner:** common in garden ponds. Butyl is a soft, pliable synthetic rubber (the same family used for tyre inner tubes) that is hard-wearing and easy to lay. It resists UV and is safe for fish, but like any rubber sheet it needs protecting from punctures.

**EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) pond liners:** another rubber liner, popular because it is soft, pliable and easy to fit to the shape of a pond. It is strong and copes well with temperature changes and constant water contact, but it costs more than HDPE or PVC.

**HDPE pond liners:** High-Density Polyethylene liners are the usual choice for large ponds, reservoirs and even small lakes. They are relatively cheap, strong, hard-wearing, and resist UV and chemicals. HDPE is stiffer than the other options, so large liners are welded on site by trained crews.

**RPE pond liners:** reinforced polyethylene is similar to HDPE but more pliable, with a woven scrim that makes it resistant to puncture and tearing. It is easy to seam and handle, safe for fish, and resists UV and chemicals.

## **About Pond Liner Cost**

Liner material has the biggest effect on cost, but lifespan matters too: a cheaper liner that has to be replaced sooner can cost more over the life of the pond.

HDPE and PVC are the cheapest materials. The more durable the liner you buy, the less likely you are to pay for reinstallation later.

> As an indicative range only, the price of a pond liner can vary anywhere between **7,000/- INR and 25,000/- INR**.
>
>
>
>
> Where your project falls depends on the material, thickness (for HDPE, typically quoted in microns, e.g. 500 micron = 0.5 mm), pond size, and whether protection geotextile and installation are included. For a firm price, ask for a quote per square metre for the grade you need.

**Ocean Global** supplies HDPE pond liners in a range of thicknesses, with geotextile underlay where the ground needs it. If you are getting quotes, our guide to [pond liner price and comparing quotes](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-pond-liner-price/) walks through sizing the sheet with run-outs and anchor trenches, choosing thickness, and the costs that sit outside the sheet rate.

## **Reason to Use Pond Liners in Your Projects**

Buyers usually ask the same questions: which liner should I choose, which suits my pond, how much material do I need? The one everyone asks is what a pond liner costs.

The number of liner types on the market makes the choice harder. We can help you pick the [pond liner that suits your pond and budget](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/pond-liner-manufacturers/).

Pond liner cost depends on the material and on the size of the pond.

For a wider overview, see our guide to [everything about pond liners](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/what-is-the-best-pond-liner-to-use/).

For large ponds bought direct rather than at retail, the liner material may be only around one-third of the total cost; earthwork, transport and installation make up much of the rest. Beyond small garden ponds, RPE, HDPE and PVC are usually more economical than EPDM, and RPE and PVC can cost about the same for a large liner.

HDPE is often recommended because it is cheaper per square foot, but it needs trained welding crews and careful handling in the field, and that is where the true cost of a liner shows.

Every pond is different. There are accepted standards to use as benchmarks for specifications (GRI-GM13 for HDPE, for example), but talking to the supplier early is the most reliable way to specify the right material and panel layout. Weigh these points before you start earthwork:

**Warranty:** it shows the supplier and installer are prepared to stand behind the result.

**Installation:** this is where most projects go wrong. Poor installation can defeat the best material specification.

**Specification:** a poorly written material specification can by itself lead to poor performance.
