# RPE vs HDPE Pond Liners: Which One Fits Your Pond?

RPE and HDPE are both polyethylene, but they are built differently and they fail differently. An HDPE pond liner is a solid extruded sheet whose strength comes from its thickness. RPE (reinforced polyethylene) is a thinner sheet with a woven scrim inside that carries the load. Neither is better for every pond. This comparison sets out what each material does well, where each one is a poor fit, and which questions decide the choice for an Indian farm pond, reservoir, aquaculture unit or effluent lagoon.

One disclosure first: Ocean supplies HDPE and LDPE sheets, not RPE. We have tried to keep the comparison fair, and there are ponds where a reinforced sheet is the sensible buy.

## How the two liners are made

**HDPE geomembrane** is extruded from high-density polyethylene resin with carbon black (2–3% under GRI-GM13) and an antioxidant package. It has no fabric inside. Tensile, tear and puncture resistance all rise in proportion to thickness, and the sheet is specified internationally by GRI-GM13 and in India by IS 16352:2020. Common pond and reservoir grades run from 500 micron to 1.5 mm.

**RPE** is a woven polyethylene scrim (a grid of tapes or threads) coated or laminated on both faces with polyethylene. The scrim gives it high tear and tensile strength at a much lower thickness and weight, and the coated sheet stays flexible enough to fold. The Geosynthetic Institute’s GRI-GM22 specification covers scrim-reinforced polyethylene for exposed temporary applications. A related Indian product, laminated woven HDPE geomembrane for water proof lining, is specified by BIS under IS 15351 for canals, ponds and reservoirs.

## Side-by-side comparison

| Property | HDPE pond liner | RPE |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Structure | Solid, unreinforced sheet | Woven scrim coated with PE |
| Strength comes from | Thickness of polymer | Scrim reinforcement |
| Elongation before break | High: GRI-GM13 smooth sheet yields at about 12% and breaks at 700% or more | Low: the scrim limits stretch |
| Weight per sq m | Higher (about 0.94 kg/sq m at 1 mm) | Lower for the same tear strength |
| Folding and prefabrication | Creases permanently; supplied in rolls, welded in the field | Folds; can be factory-welded into large panels |
| Chemical resistance | Broad: leachate, acids, alkalis, hydrocarbons | Good for water; check for chemicals |
| Standards | GRI-GM13, IS 16352 | GRI-GM22 (exposed temporary use); IS 15351 for laminated woven HDPE |
| Field skill needed | Trained welders, wedge and extrusion machines | Fewer field seams; still needs proper welding |

## Where an HDPE pond liner is the right choice

**Permanent ponds with long design lives.** HDPE that meets GRI-GM13 has a published durability basis. The Geosynthetic Institute’s accelerated ageing work (GRI White Paper 6) estimated a half-life of roughly 450 years for a covered 1.5 mm sheet at 20°C. Exposed sheet ages much faster, but the antioxidant and carbon black requirements in GM13 exist to slow that down.

**Anything with chemicals in it.** Effluent ponds, ETP lagoons, oil pits and leachate ponds need the broad chemical resistance of HDPE. Ocean has supplied [1.5 mm HDPE for an oil pit reservoir in Assam](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/ocean-hdpe-liner-1-5-mm-for-oil-pit-reservoir-in-assam-a-detailed-case-study/), a job where a thin reinforced sheet would be the wrong call.

**Projects where the regulator names the material.** The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 call for a 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane (or equivalent) in an MSW landfill base liner. Tender documents for lagoons and reservoirs often cite GRI-GM13 or IS 16352 directly, which settles the choice.

**Aquaculture.** Black UV-stabilised HDPE is inert, can be welded into one sheet and tolerates sun on the slopes and pond cleaning. An example is the [500 micron HDPE liner at ICAR-NRC for Makhana, Darbhanga](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/hdpe-liner-500-micron/).

**Ponds that will settle or see point loads.** HDPE’s ductility lets it stretch around a stone or over local settlement without tearing open. A scrim-reinforced sheet is stronger at small strains but runs out of stretch quickly.

## Where RPE has the edge

**Remote sites and short programmes.** A lighter, foldable sheet is easier to carry to hill and island sites without heavy unloading equipment, and factory-welded panels cut the number of seams made in the field.

**Temporary and exposed works.** Construction-stage water storage, temporary covers, and liners expected to be replaced within a few years are the use GRI-GM22 was written for.

**Uneven ground on small ponds.** A flexible sheet drapes into the bed with fewer wrinkles than stiff HDPE. If flexibility is the main concern and the sheet will be covered, [LDPE sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/low-density-polyethylene-ldpe-sheets/) are another option to price.

## The weak points of each

**HDPE.** It is stiff, so it needs a smooth, compacted subgrade and attention to wrinkles caused by thermal expansion on hot days. It must be welded on site by trained crews, and every seam has to be tested. Poor resin or poorly made welds can lead to stress cracking, which is why GRI-GM13 sets a 500-hour minimum stress crack resistance (ASTM D5397).

**RPE.** Quality varies a great deal between makers. Ask whether the coating resin and the scrim tapes are virgin polyethylene, check the weave density, and ask what specification the sheet is tested to. A thin coating over the scrim can wear through on exposed slopes, and if the scrim is exposed it can wick water along the sheet.

## How to choose for your pond

Work through these in order:

1. **What does the pond hold?** Anything other than clean water points to HDPE.
2. **Does a regulation or tender name the liner?** Follow it.
3. **How long must it last?** Permanent works favour HDPE to GRI-GM13; short-life works can consider RPE.
4. **Can the site take rolls and welding crews?** If not, a prefabricated flexible sheet may be the practical answer.
5. **How rough is the subgrade?** Either liner needs a nonwoven geotextile underlay on stony ground.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is RPE stronger than an HDPE pond liner?

At the same thickness, a scrim-reinforced sheet has higher tear and tensile strength because the scrim carries the load. HDPE stretches much further before it breaks, so it copes better with settlement and stones pressing into it. “Stronger” depends on which kind of load the pond sees.

### Which lasts longer?

For permanent, covered ponds, HDPE to GRI-GM13 has the stronger durability record. GRI-GM22, the specification for scrim-reinforced polyethylene, is written for exposed temporary applications. Check the maker’s stated service life and the test data behind it.

### Is RPE cheaper than HDPE?

It depends on thickness, quantity and site. RPE uses less material per sq m for a given tear strength and may need fewer field seams, while HDPE sheet is often cheaper per kilogram. Compare installed cost, including welding, testing and underlay, not the sheet rate alone.

### What HDPE thickness is used for fish ponds?

Black UV-stabilised [HDPE sheets](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/ocean-geomembrane/high-density-polyethylene-sheets-hdpe/) of 500–1000 micron are typical for fish and shrimp ponds, going thicker where the slopes are exposed or the bed is stony.

### Does Ocean supply RPE?

No. Ocean supplies HDPE and LDPE geomembrane sheets and [pond liners](https://oceangeosynthetics.com/products/pond-liner-manufacturers/), with nonwoven geotextile underlay. If your pond suits HDPE, send us the size and use for a quote.
