Geotextiles in Sports Engineering

Natural Turf vs. Artificial Turf in Sports Fields:

Natural grass is not always practical for a heavily used field. It needs rest and time to grow, suffers from weather and wear, and needs water, fertiliser, pest control and regular maintenance. Bald patches, mud and dust appear quickly, and the number of hours a natural pitch can take each year is limited.

Artificial (synthetic) turf is now widely used for sports fields. It can be played on for many more hours a year than natural grass, needs far less water, and costs less in time and money to maintain. It copes with difficult climates and is durable. Choose products tested for player safety and made from materials certified as non-toxic, since infill and fibre quality vary between products.

An artificial turf field is only as good as its base, which has to take water off the surface and drain it away. Poor drainage leaves standing water and leads to mould, mildew and bacteria. A geotextile with good drainage properties in the base keeps the turf clean and extends its life.
