Basal Reinforcement

Basal Reinforcement

Whenever construction is carried out on soft or unstable ground, there is a risk of settlement. This can be due to natural geological effects like subsidence and sinkholes, or man-made impacts such as mining voids. Additionally, when the overburden on native ground significantly increases, issues of differential settlement or collapse can arise. In mining operations, stockpiled materials or heap leach pads impose substantial surcharges on the ground.

Differential settlement can be managed through the construction of a basal platform to distribute the load on the ground. In more extreme scenarios, this platform can be supported by piles, such as within embankments that support infrastructure. The effectiveness of this platform can be significantly enhanced with the use of high-strength geosynthetic geogrids. These geogrids help absorb, spread, span, or dissipate vertical loads downwards into the ground or piles. One of our most successful solutions is our high-strength geogrid, capable of strengths up to 1,600 kN/m. Such high strengths enable wider pile spacing, leading to more cost-effective solutions.

Although these solutions may seem straightforward, they exemplify the beauty of good engineering. Designing such interventions requires extensive experience and a deep understanding of the performance of geosynthetics. At Ocean Global, we pride ourselves on being a manufacturer, designer, and supplier of these solutions. This positions us perfectly to understand and fulfill the technical needs of our clients. We optimize the solution, design, and final product to ensure the highest performance. It is the combination of our products and the overall system performance that is of utmost importance.
